Islands, Islands and More Islands
Twillingate is actually an island of its own. In order to get to it, you must cross over New World Island. New World Island is one of the largest inhabited Islands in Newfoundland. New World and Twillingate islands are connected by a causeway.

Fridays Bay Cottages
Fridays Bay Cottages are located on New World Island in Fairbanks, Newfoundland. The cottages were recommended by friends with very good traveling taste, and they were right! Each cottage is named for its color. We chose one close to the end to get the fullest view of Notre Dame Bay. All of the cottages have a deck with two chairs and a table where we enjoyed our morning tea and evening cocktail. There is a BBQ at each cottage but we chose the option of having our dinner selected from the tank out front, boiled for us and delivered! Our lobster dinner was delicious!
Zodiac Boat Tours
In addition to the cottages, the family operated business also runs boat tours in a 6-seater rigid-hull inflatable Zodiac. We were told that each tour is unique, based on the days weather, where the marine life or icebergs are, and the guests.
We were very lucky to have had close encounters with whales in several areas and the Zodiac (and terrific guide) got us much closer than any of the larger tour vessels in the area. The trip was AWESOME! I posted the best photos on Facebook but there were a lot more.
If you are visiting Newfoundland Fridays Bay Cottages is worth a stay for at least two nights, maybe three.
Twillingate Dinner Theatre
We were also fortunate to get a ticket to a truly Newfoundland experience at the NWI dinner theatre. Shows run 6 days a week from May to Sept, but are often sold out in the summer months. The dinner theatre offers an authentic taste and sound of the area. We chose one of each of the Cod and Lobster dinner options, and sat back to enjoy the show of all local artists performing both traditional and new newfie songs.
Ferry from Channel-Port-aux-Basque
Our seven nights was still not enough time to see much of Cornerbrook or to go to Gros Morne, so a trip back to Fridays Bay Cottages and more time on the western side of Newfoundland will be needed.
The ferry from Channel-Port aux Basques back to North Sydney has both a day and night option. We chose the daytime sailing for the 8-hour journey but still booked a cabin to have a quiet place to relax. We both ended up taking a nap, quite needed after all the Newfoundland adventures!
Next stop…New Brunswick and Quebec…but no PEI 😥
You don’t have to be location independent to see the world. It just helps. Sometimes it is complicated and sometimes it’s not…but it is ALWAYS worth
