Road Trip 2024 – Part 1

The first week of my road trip took me from Whiterock, BC to Winnipeg Manitoba with stops in Penticton, Kelowna, Calgary and Regina. I was not counting on the snow!

Road Trip Musings

A few days before I left on the start of this coast-to-coast road trip someone said to me “Wow, that’s a lot of time to get into your own head” and he was right! So as ideas came into my head I started writing them down – actually voice texting them to myself with the help of Siri. I will share some musings and road trip tips as I go along.

Part 1 – Whiterock, BC to Winnipeg Manitoba

I left Whiterock on April 12 and have driven 2,502 kilometres so far. I spent a night in Penticton, two in Kelowna, three in Calgary, one in Regina and I will be in Winnipeg for two weeks. The highest gas prices were in BC (shocker) and the total cost of gas to get to Winnipeg was $321.29 (in case anyone wanted to know) 😉.

Me and Siri

I am getting very acquainted with what Siri can and cannot do by voice command.

Texting – The most used feature so far and certainly a handy one is voice to text. With my phone either plugged into the USB or using Apple Car play Siri can read incoming texts to me and then send my responses back. I let my team know on the days that I am driving that they can text me all day but no email. So work can still get done.

Music – Siri can skip to the next song on both Apple Music and Spotify playlists but cannot access or navigate specific playlists on Spotify. I guess Apple doesn’t give full access for non-Apple apps. I tried this both over Bluetooth and plugged in, but no success.

MapsSince I prefer Google Maps to Apple Maps the phone must be plugged into the USB to use it on the larger car screen. This has been working great.

Meetings – I actually used the Microsoft Teams app to join a meeting while driving between Regina and Brandon. The sound was pretty good. I did not use video for safety sake, but think I could have as the signal was strong.

Hotel Loyalty

I had five Marriott nights and one Hilton night over the trip. With Marriott Lifetime Platinum status now achieved, I decided to give a few Hiltons a try. I was fortunate to have a home stay and a home-cooked dinner in Penticton. Thank you Diane.

States and Provinces

There were no new provinces on this portion of the trip, but three new states are coming in May – #45, 46 and 47.

You don’t have to be location independent to see the world. It just helps. Sometimes it is complicated and sometimes it’s not…but it is ALWAYS worth it!
