Red Rooster Winery
Red Rooster is located on the Naramata Bench near Penticton, B.C. We’ve been there a number of times and in fact we did lease a row of vines annually a few years ago. Red Rooster was founded in 1990 and produced their first bootle of wine in 1997. The last time we were there was a couple of years ago (2010?) and were able to purchase this aged Meritage from a few cases that the winery had held back.
Red Rooster Meritage
The 2005 Red Rooster Meritage is made with a variety of grapes from vineyards throughout the South Okanagan. There is also Malbec grapes grown by Red Rooster mixed in as well. The wine is first placed in stainless steel tanks. It is then transferred and stored for 12 months in a combination of American and French Oak.
Tasting the Meritage
The 2005 Red Rooster Meritage is very dark in colour and smells of dark red and black berry fruits. The taste was excellent, very smooth and filled with lots of great fruit flavours and a subtle hint of oak. The wine finishes with just the right amount of spiciness. We both really like it and at $35.00 thought it was good value! The only problem is that the 2005 is now sold out but there are other years of the Meritage available.
