Haywire Wines
We hadn’t been to Haywire Winery before. During a summer camping trip (yes, camping) last year we found ourselves in Summerland. It’s a place we haven’t spent much time and with a little research we put together a wine map to try some new things. We were searching out Okanagan Crush Pad which it turns out is also the maker of Haywire wines and many more.
Okanagan Crush Pad is a high-end 35,000 case, small lot custom winemaking facility where vineyard owners or other wineries can use their equipment to make an exclusive new wine. The 7,750 square foot Okanagan Crush Pad Winery is located on a 10-acre property in Summerland, BC, known as Switchback Vineyard. There is of course a very nice tasting room on site.
Haywire Switchback Pinot Gris
We tasted a few wines while we were at the winery and purchased a few different bottles that we hadn’t opened at home yet. Last week we were in the mood for a white wine since it was actually warm enough in Vancouver to have our first cocktail outside. We decided to give the 2012 Haywire Switchback Pinot Gris a try. Switchback is the name of the winery’s home vineyard.
A little darker yellow in color than we would expect from most Pinot Gris, the wine has a natural earthy smell but flavours of summer fruits. The finish is smooth and enjoyable. For our first Haywire wine at home we enjoyed it. At $23 it in our higher price range for Pinot Gris, but we would buy another bottle. The outdoor cocktail hour lasted exactly that – one hour – as it is still too chilly in April once the sun goes down. But it is a start!
