When Wine Is In Your Backyard
A couple of weeks ago we were visiting some friends in White Rock, B.C. and decided to hit up a couple of wineries close to them in Langley, B.C. A quick internet search and we discovered a couple of wineries within about a 20 minute drive from their place that we had not been to before. Shocker right?! The second one we visited was Backyard Vineyards. It was almost like the winery was in their backyard and they didn’t even know it. 😉
Backyard Vineyards
The winery is located on 232 Street in Langley. It is an impressive place, as you turn off the street. You will see the tasting room and winery on your left and a large gazebo on the right. There is plenty of parking available on site and what looks like a mile or two of grapes growing in the field behind.
The Tasting Room
The tasting room is tucked in behind a couple of large garage doors (which were open for the day). It is very spacious, clean and well appointed. All the social distancing measures were in place. We were given a box to stand in (taped on the floor). Our taster wore a mask and there was sanitizer at each tasting station. We felt like it was a really safe environment.
The Wine
We tasted 5 or 6 wines (who can remember them all) and purchased two that we tried. We ended up with the Backyard Nosey Neighbour Red, a blend, priced at $18.95. We both also loved the Backyard Reserve Cabernet Franc and had to have a bottle of it, even with the $50 price tag. The 2017 Cab Franc is 100% Cab Franc grapes aged for 17 months in French Oak of which 25% of the barrels are new. It is very smooth drinking with tastes of berries and a little bit of plum. We opened it last night and loved it as much as we did when we at the tasting. It’s not an everyday wine at that price, but with a good meal at home we certainly enjoyed it. We look forward to finding a few more hidden gems on our next trip out to the White Rock area.
