The Kaboom Box I & II
Since the weather has been so great the food cart season in Vancouver is still going strong. Last week I ventured solo to Kaboom Box II located on Georgia between Burrard and Thurlow Streets. The two Kaboom truck menus are similar. Kaboom Box I is located on the corner of Granville and Robson and features a smoked salmon “salmwich”, fish & chips, oyster po’boy, veggie and venison burgers, poutine and a rotating salad selection. The Kaboom Box II menu also includes the salmwich and the oyster po’boy but also offers crab cake po’boy, andouille sausage po’boy, eggplant muffuleta and three set salads – house, crab cake and zucchini & salmon.
Oceanwise and local
Both Kaboom Box trucks use locally sourced ingredients as much as possible and only Oceanwise seafood – those products deemed Ocean Wise by the Vancouver Aquarium conservation program. All packaging is biodegradable and compostable. Owner Andy is a veteran street vendor who got his start on the streets of San Francisco.
Crab Cake Salad
The cake is made from Canadian Rock crab and deep fried. It is served along side organic greens with dried cranberries, candied almonds and a tangy vinagrette dressing. A side of lemon-garlic aioli for dipping the crab cake is also included for the $9 tax in price. The crab cake was very good but I would have preferred that it was pan-fried instead of deep fried. The salad had a good portion of almonds and cranberries but not enough dressing for my taste. The biodegradable container was the right size with a section for the dip which made carrying and eating on a bench easy. The staff at the cart (both order taker and cook) were very friendly and chatting with the customers despite the longish line. A good experience overall.
