BC Ferries
We don’t have to go to Vancouver Island for business often, usually about six times per year. Every time we have, in the past, we have travelled with BC Ferries. Most of the time we go from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo. A typical trip looks like this:
- 7:00am – leave the house
- 7:30am – arrive at the ferry terminal and get in line
- 8:30am – board the ferry
- 10:15am – get off the ferry
- 10:45am – arrive a clients golf course
- 11:00am – BUSINESS MEETING
- 1:00pm – leave clients golf course
- 1:30pm – arrive at ferry terminal and get in line
- 2:30pm – board the ferry
- 4:15pm – get off ferry
- 5:00pm – arrive home
It’s a pretty long day (10 hours) for a two hour business meeting. The ferry also has among the worst “free” WIFI around so we typically can’t get a lot of other work done while travelling on it.
Harbour Air
A few weeks ago we were asked to head over again to meet with our client and (as it is a busy time for us right now) we considered our options and decided to fly with Harbour Air. Here’s how that trip went:
- 9:15am – leave home (on foot)
- 9:30am – check in at Harbour Air Coal Harbour (fast, efficient and free lattes)
- 10:00am – board plane
- 10:25am – arrive in Nanaimo Harbour
- 11:00am – arrive at clients golf course
- 1:00pm – leave clients golf course
- 1:30pm – arrive at Nanaimo Harbour
- 2:00pm – flight leaves
- 2:25pm – flight lands in Coal Harbour
- 2:45pm – home
A much more efficient way to travel. If you are wondering, it costs us about $225 (return on BC Ferries) and Harbour Air flew both of us (return) for $390. It was a much more effective way to travel to Vancouver Island for a day trip and it turned a 10 hour day into a 6.5 hour day. The added bonus is the views are fantastic as you can see in our photos below:
