Best Bar-B-Que
After some serious internet research on the best BBQ in Kansas and Missouri we found Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que in Kansas City, Kansas, and the research paid off! This was the first time we both really enjoyed a BBQ lunch. It was that good. The difference this time was that the menu was not just beef and pork but also included chicken and turkey. The building and history are also pretty cool since the restaurant is in a gas station! The restaurant is cafeteria style – which suits the location well. The staff is super efficient. You tell your order to the cook at the window who yells the meat and the sides back to other cooks and to the cashier. You order a beer (or get a cup for a pop) and by the time you get to the till and pay your food is ready. You can read about the craft beer we had here. The tables are set with sauces, salts, napkins and utensils. There is a wall of takeout containers, lids, bags etc because you will surely have left overs!
Smoked is the way to go
The website calls it smoky magic – and we agree! The owners, Jeff and Joy Stehney, are all about the smoke. “In Kansas City, where barbecue is a way of life, it is understood that smoke has mystical properties. Smoke has the power to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary. It can transform the least desirable cuts of meat into the most delectable. It can even transform a neighborhood corner gas station into one of the most popular restaurants on the planet.”
Turkey, Ribs, Pulled Pork & Baked Beans
The Open-Faced Lean ‘n’ Mean ($7.19) was the best turkey we’ve ever had. The sandwich was piled high with with smoked turkey on Texas toast, topped with spicy slaw but it was all about the turkey. The meat was moist and tender and yes smokey delicious. The Ribs & One Meat Dinner ($14.09) was also great. The ribs were lean but tender and juicy and the pulled pork was all about the special Joe’s sauce. We chose Baked Beans ($2.89) and Fries (included) as sides. The beans had chucks of brisket which gave them a different texture and flavour than we expected. They were spicy with a bit of sweet. The fries were covered with Joe’s own seasoning. Both sides were good but we did not really need them with the large main portions.
Don’t Miss Out on BBQ
There are 2 other Joe’s Kansas City BBQ locations that we are sure are equally good, but the gas station was a fun spot to visit. If you are not in Kansas you don’t need to miss out. You can actually order Joe’s to be delivered!! Joe’s worked with the USDA to custom-built their own approved and inspected smokehouse. It features the same smokers used in their restaurants. It’s all the same. The same meat, the same rubs and seasonings, the same wood, the same techniques and process. Even the same pitmasters. But only available in the USA, not in Canada, yet.
