Hendry Ranch Winery
The Hendry Ranch Winery is located in the Napa Valley, however we tasted Hendry Zinfandel while having dinner in Chattanooga, Tennessee a two weeks ago. (The restaurant Easy Bistro was terrific – more on that later). The ranch/winery is located about 15 minutes West of Napa. The Ranch began planting grapes as early as the late 1880’s. It took a while through some challenging times (like prohibition) but finally in the early 2000’s the wine shop was built. The family has continued to operate both the working Winery and the working Ranch, farming the land that has been passed down for generations.

Hendry Blocks 7 & 22
Hendry blocks 7 and 22 are located on benchlands west of the town of Napa. There is nine acres that are located about 230 to 300 feet above sea level. Block 7 was planted in 1975 and block 22 was planted in 1995, both to produce Zinfandel wine. The grapes for this wine are harvested at three different times of year from the same blocks, spring, summer and fall.

Hendry Blocks 7 & 22 Zinfandel
This Zin is light Burgundy in colour (lighter than most Zinfandels) and there are hints of cherry and blackberries in the taste. The finish has a bit of spice likely from the French Oak barrel that the wine spends 15 months in. Their website refers to it as a “Pinot lovers Zin” which is why Tara loved it. Listed at $36 US it is a bit pricey but for a treat once in a while it was worth it. Next time we are in Napa we will check out the vineyard itself directly and try a tasting of some of Hendry’s other offerings.
