Sun Life Financial – CK Golf Solutions Golf Industry Professional Series
We had a chance to play Burnaby Mountain recently in the third event of the Sun Life Financial – CK Golf Solutions Golf Industry Professional Series. This is a six event series we run for public golf course operators (General Managers, Golf Professionals, Superintendents or anyone who works in the golf industry). It is loosely an invitational, but it is about the business of golf. On this day we had a great opening talk by Jerry Rousseau and Trevor Smith from the Western Canada Turf Grass Association. Great discussion and lots of conversation carried over to the golf course. After our hour and half we headed to play a skins game which we do at every event.

Burnaby Mountain was a great host for the third event on our schedule. The staff were super friendly and helpful. As we headed to the first tee, the golf course looked to be in great shape (we were pre-warned that the greens had been double cut and rolled that morning). Burnaby Mountain is not an overly long golf course but has some challenging holes. We played the back tees at a little over 6,400 yards. There are a couple of short par 5’s on the front nine (like the Par 5 first hole) which yielded a number of birdies, but the Par 5’s get longer on the back 9 adding to the challenge. I thought the real challenge in the golf course lied in the Par 3 holes which played to mid to long irons. Tara played nine holes and found all of the Par 4 holes long from the ladies tee but she had a good time anyway. The greens were in good condition and certainly the highlight feature.

Burnaby Mountain spent significant dollars on drainage the past few years. You can see the improvements in the drainage on the tees, fairways (which were great) and around the greens. After a particularly wet couple of weeks the drainage work is a great improvement over the last time I played Burnaby Mountain (about 5 years earlier). Burnaby Mountain was fun day of golf and at it’s price point ($36 on weekdays) is a good value for the fee.
