Last week, while entertaining some out-of-town guests we decided to go to Saltlik for dinner. I had only been there once before and did not have the best experience but Jeff had been there several times and liked it. I checked out the menu online and found enough alternate options to steak and so we decided to go. The restaurant is located on Alberni, almost at Burrard. As their tag line says the décor is casual and comfortable. It was a very quite Monday night and our table of five was one of only three in the dining area. The lounge had a few visitors, but not many, giving our waiter lots of time to take care of us – which he did.
For starters we all chose a small Caesar salad. Having eaten many, many Caesar salads, most versions (except for Hy’s) tend to run together in my memory. However, the grilled half lemon with the seeds removed and the service with a chilled fork did make this one stand out. The flavor was really good too. The dinner menu consists of two main sections – steak, and everything else. With a multitude of meat options to choose from Jeff ordered the Chipotle Barbeque Sirloin which was served with a steaming hot baked potato with all of the fixings. The steak was covered in a thick and smoky BBQ sauce. While the flavor was good he was reminded why he usually opts for a New York cut over a Sirloin.
I chose the Halibut with Chardonnay butter. Once the plate was delivered the sauce was poured table side by our server. The aroma of the butter sauce was amazing with everyone else at the table wishing that they had chosen this dish as well and the taste did not disappoint. The halibut was also covered with deep fried capers and served on a bed of baby potatoes, green beans and sweet peas. Delicious. There were not many other menu items that were of interest for me to try but I will definitely go back for that Halibut dish again. Our guests were equally impressed with their choices as well. It also did not hurt that we ordered one of my favorite wines – Quails Gate Pinot Noir. This time around I really did enjoy Saltlik. The service and the food were great and we were in the company of family and good wine. What could be better than that?
Food – GREAT (Tara); GOOD (Jeff) Service – GREAT Atmosphere – GOOD
