Burgoo Bistro
A friend has been telling me for over a year that we needed to try Burgoo. We finally went for lunch today and I cannot believe we waited so long and missed out on so many great meals! Burgoo has three locations, Lonsdale, West 10th and 3096 Main Street which is the one we chose. The décor was laid back with dark wood and benches. The interior is quite small and it was fairly busy even though we went for lunch after 2:00 pm. There is a decent size bar with seats for 10 and a small patio that would be great in summer. Our server was polite but not very attentive. However, what really mattered was the food.
Food for Comfort
With the menu following the restaurant’s tag line ‘Food for Comfort’ we wanted to try everything. With 6 homemade soups and 5 sandwiches to choose from, in the end we both chose a soup and sandwich combo. Tara opted for Carrot soup and Gooey Cheese Grillers. The soup was served very hot which was great because in most restaurants it is never hot enough. It was creamy with a bit of spice and very tasty. The sandwich, which combined Mozzarella, Gruyere, Emmenthal and white Cheddar was very rich and very delicious. It was also very huge (two sandwiches) and provided leftovers for the next day. Jeff chose the Sunset Corn and Chicken Soup with the Chicken Caesar Clubhouse. The soup was also very creamy with a Mexican flavor. The sandwich (also huge) had thick bacon slices, roasted chicken, parmesan cheese, romaine and Caesar dressing all served on a multigrain bun. Again, enough for leftovers. All of the food was great!
International Flavors
Each menu item has country abbreviations next to the name. When we got home I checked out the Burgoo website to find out the philosophy behind this. “Burgoo is an international cookhouse serving value-oriented, flavour filled dishes of food for comfort, from light to hearty meals, all made with wholesome goodness”. Value oriented – definitely. Flavor filled – absolutely. We will be going back to try out more of the great menu. And since we do not like to cook picking up soups from the Edible BC store or take out from one of the Burgoo locations is also a possibility.
