Is there anything better then playoff hockey? We had the great fortune to win the lottery that has become “Ticketmaster” and purchase tickets on-line for game 2 of the Vancouver Canucks versus the St. Louis Blues.
We planned ahead and made an outing of the whole event, which worked out great as our game was on a Friday night. Leaving home about 4:30 PM and heading up to Robson Street before turning South down “tourist row” (Robson Street) we slowly made our way to Richards street before heading back-up to Georgia Street and to the Shark Club. It’s a local favourite for downtown workers, fans and a previous finalist for Canada’s Favourite Sports Bar. It is uniquely located between GM Place (the garage) and BC Place (the dome), which makes it a favourite among locals and tourists alike.
After an appetizer and a couple of beers we checked out and headed to the Garage in time for the warm-up. The atmosphere in the building was electric and chants of ‘Go Canucks Go’ were only drowned out when the fans, including us, sang over the paid ‘O Canada’ singer with extreme jubilance. We were excited for the puck to drop!
When it did we weren’t disappointed. After a slow start, being out shot, the Nucks’ scored first. It was a hard hitting game with little after whistle crap (until the end of the game). Finally with a Henrik Sedin empty netter, the Nucks’ grabbed a two game series lead with the 3-0 win (Alexander Burrows, my favourite player, scored as did ‘who cares’ Mats Sundin). Ryan Kesler, my second favourite, was awesome blocking shots on the PK.
On the walk home the car flags and horn honking reminded everyone how the city has gone ‘Canuck Crazy”, its a great thing – we are loving it. Nothing like another win this past Sunday night to continue the “parade” talk – Nucks lead St. Louis 3 games to 0 going into game 4 tonight!
Bye the way, the baby Canucks (the Manitoba Moose) lost tonight on the road to do down 2 games to 1 in the series with the ‘minor league’ Toronto Marlies (the big club is of course playing golf). Go Moose, from an old Winnipeg Jets fan!
