Great atmosphere on Broadway
What seems like almost an industrial part of Broadway is home to this neighborhood gem restaurant. With prices and portions that put downtown Vancouver to shame, the food and service was pretty good too. Martini’s restaurant has been open since 1973 and its menu features both Italian and Greek cuisine. It is known for having one of Vancouver’s first and finest whole-wheat pizzas. We were with a some friends and luckily had a reservation as the restaurant was full at 7:00 on a Wednesday night. Our server was busy but with the help of other staff kept up with us and her other tables.
The “Chicken and Ribs” ($17) were part of the Specials menu which changes monthly. A half rack of baby rack ribs was glazed with homemade BBQ sauce and paired with a boneless chicken breast. The flavors were good and the garlic mashed potatoes were creamy. All entrees also came with a side salad to start (which we could not believe for the price).
The Spanish Tortellini ($13) was a spinach & cheese tortellini sauteed with red peppers, mushrooms and red onions in a spicy tomato cream sauce topped with parmesan. It is unlikely that the pasta was made in house but it was cooked well (not overdone) and the sauce was flavourful. This also came with a side salad to start (all for $13).
Steak & Grilled Prawns ($17) was part of the Specials menu and was available in June. The meal includes a 7oz triple A New York steak with grilled prawns. It is served with green salad, garlic
mashed potatoes, daily vegetables & garlic bread.
All dinner entrees came with a starter size green salad. We thought that this was pretty impressive given the price of the entrees. And the salad was more than just greens, there was carrots, red onions, olives and tomato.
There is also a patio on Broadway for sunny days, although there is not much to look at on this particular part of the street. We had a surprisingly good experience with the food and the service. We were happy with our random pick off the Urbanspoon app. Although Martini’s is out of our regular dining area it was an easy Canada Line ride (to the stop at Cambie and Broadway) and a few block walk so we may stop in again to try the famous whole wheat pizzas. If not, they do deliver every day of the week from lunch until late.
