Best Patios in Vancouver
Who can resist a patio with a water view when the weather is great in Vancouver? Not us. And Local Public Eatery at 2210 Cornwall Ave has a great patio right across the street from the beach in Kitsilano. After being listed as one of the best patios in Kits by VanCity Buzz we had to give it a try. Local serves lunch starting at 11am Monday to Friday and brunch on weekends starting at 10am. It is open late every night. The decor reminded us of the many pubs we visited in California recently with booths in the back, high top tables with bar stools, a large bar that is the main focus inside the restaurant and big outdoor seating area. It is built for sunny days with large garage-like doors that open to bring the outside in for those sitting inside. Our server was fast, friendly and casual which fit the vibe perfectly.

We had to try the “Cheese Toast -Hangover Fix” ($7.50) to see how it compared. The Texas toast with a 5 cheese blend spread was the best we’ve found outside our favorite Hy’s version. The cheese toast and the patio alone will bring us back.

The “Crispy Chicken Sandwich” ($14) was served on a Portuguese bun. We didn’t know what this meant at first but the bun was slightly sweet and a bit crusty. It was topped with BBQ mustard sauce. Jeff nixed the coleslaw topper but added cheese. The burger was pretty good. So were the fries.

I was impressed that you could order one fish or chicken taco. The “Baja Fish Tac0” ($4.50) was a decent portion of beer battered fish and a tasty sauce but with too much cabbage even for a cabbage lover and not enough salsa. The flavours were good but the portions were wrong.

The “Guacamole” ($6) was hand-made table side in a silver bowl. Our server arrived at the table with the avocado in the bowl with lemon juice and salt and asked if we wanted cilantro and onions. She then mashed the ingredients for us. Now that is fresh! And it was very good. To scoop the Guacamole the “Fresh Chips” were warm and tasted fresh as well but the “and Salsa” ($6 for both) was runny and disappointing. It was more a mild taco sauce than a salsa.

The menu at Local is a neat idea. It is folded like a map and opens to reveal the starters, salads, sandwiches, burgers, favorites, weekend brunch and late night snacks. The cheese toast will bring us back but I also want to try the Huevos Rancheros (served every day) or the Tuna Club Sandwich on the next sunny Vancouver day.
