Round One of the Vancouver City Open Golf Championship kicked off today at Fraserview and Langara Golf Courses. The amateurs in flight A & B teed it up at Langara, while the Championship flight Amateurs played Fraserview this morning. The Professionals played in an afternoon shotgun at Fraserview to raise money for the CKNW Orphan’s Fund. Their scores do count towards their 54 hole score for the tournament.

The Championship is being conducted over three days utilizing all three Vancouver Parks Golf Courses. Play resumes Monday at 7:30 am with the Fraserview group playing Lanagara while the Langara group moves over to Fraserview. After a cut in each division, the final round will begin Tuesday morning at McCleery Golf Course.  Spectators are welcome with a one day pass for only $5 which will be donated to the CKNW Orphan’s Fund.

The Vancouver Golf Tour is conducting the event as the wrap-up Championship from its full schedule of play this season.  The VGT has been developed for local Professionals and Amateurs – giving them the opportunity for a high level of competition in a PGA Tour environment without spending excess travel dollars.  The mission statement of VGT is to send a minimum of one Professional down to compete in the PGA Tour Qualifying School every year.

The top ranked player on the 2009 VGT Order of Merit will be granted a fully paid entry to compete in the 2009 PGA Tour Qualifying School.  With the strongest field of the year assembled for this event, the competition for that $5,000 entry to PGA Tour Q-School comes down to two players, Bryn Parry and Adam Hadwin.  Parry leads Hadwin by only $1,994.50 on the money list.  A top 3 finish or victory by Hadwin may be enough to propel him past Parry, who is having another strong year and will be looking for a good finish himself to get another opportunity at the PGA Tour.  It should make for a photo finish on Tuesday.
