Tomorrow, April 24th is Earth Day
Earth Day was first launched in the United States in 1970. In 1990, two million Canadians joined 200 million people in 141 nations to celebrate the first International Earth Day. Now more than 6 million Canadians join 1 billion people in over 170 countries to celebrate Earth Day events. In Canada, Earth Day has grown into Earth Week and even Earth Month to accommodate the large amount of events and projects. Below is a selection of some of the events in BC and Vancouver that we think you should know about…
Vancouver Earth Day Activities:
UBC Robson Square – Film Screening, April 22nd 7pm
The Land Conservancy of BC, UBC Robson Square and the Vancouver Courier present a screening of three award-winning films from the International Wildlife Film Festival. Doors open at 6:30. Entry is by donation. Registration at the door.
ScrapArtsMusic – Stanley Theatre, April 22nd 7pm
ScrapArtsMusic is a 5-member invented instrument group known around the world for their 145+ sculptural instruments made from recycled materials. Fresh off an explosive performance during the 2010 Olympic Closing Ceremonies and a critically acclaimed USA tour. Tickets at www.vancouvertix.com.
Vancouver Earth Day Celebrations – Everett Crowley Park, April 24th 11am to 3pm
Award-winning entertainment, environmental exhibits and more. Located near Kerr Rd. and Marine Way
Vancouver Public Library – Film Screening, April 24th, 4pm
‘Meat the Truth’ forms an addendum to Al Gore´s Inconvenient Truth. Interviews with prominent scientists from the United Nations and World Watch Institute revealed that livestock farming generates more greenhouse gas emissions worldwide than all cars, trains, ships and planes combined.
Other BC Earth Day Events:
Fernie, BC – Trashy but Flashy Fashion Show – Fernie Community Center, April 22th 5pm
Fusing trash and fashion on the runway. For the 4th year in a row, the Fashion Show aims to inspire the community to assess their consumption patterns by demonstrating creative methods of re-using. Cash prizes are distributed for a number of categories, and all entrants receive a t-shirt. A panel of judges will be looking for elements of recycled material used, unique use of materials, creativity, and craftsmanship.
Mission, BC – Take a Hike on the Wild Side – Matsqui Regional Park, – April 19th to 23rd, 9am to 5pm
A fundraising initiative that blends two worthwhile causes: supporting adventure-based learning programs for 40 of Vancouver’s at-risk youth, and protecting our planet by offsetting greenhouse gas emissions through tree planting. The planting area will be in Matsqui Regional Park, in the Fraser Valley next to the Mission Bridge.
Richmond, BC – Electronics Round-up – Richmond Center, April 22nd, 7:30am to 9pm

Victoria Earth Day Celebration – Parkside Resort & Spa, Victoria, April 22nd, 1pm to 9:30pm
