With Canada’s 7-2 thrashing over Sweden in Saturday night’s semi-final, the stage was set for a rematch with team USA. This of course would be the same USA squad which thoroughly beat the Canadian Women 4-2 in Thursday’s round-robin game.

Sunday’s final began with high tempo and good energy, but like the last game Team USA got on the board first with a power play marker by Monique Lamoureux to lead 1-0. Team Canada managed to tie it with 25 seconds left in the first period on a goal by Meghan Agosta, also on the power play. The pace slowed considerably in the second and third periods, although there was some feistiness after a number of whistles. Natalie Darwitz scored what proved to be the game winner 1:18 seconds into the final period. Team Canada got the silver medal, but this isn’t this tournament that counts, that comes in February back in Vancouver for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. All in all, I believe that Team Canada will need to tighten up their systems as a number of passes were made throughout the game to areas where there was no Canadian player waiting. Six months left to prepare!

Tara really enjoyed taking in her first Women’s Hockey games, although I don’t think it was any match for the moment when the jumbotron camera panned over to Jillian and Ed (from the Bachelorette). It appears they are still together and Tara was quick to send the news out over Twitter (her account @ckgolfsolution1).

All in all we took in two games including the gold medal final; and the games were not only a great value at $27 per ticket, but very fast on the both the ice and in time played (under 2:15 for each game is the way that hockey should be). As I stated in a tweet, “who said there is no hitting in women’s hockey, these girls are killing each other”. It is as physical as any other hockey we watch, whether the NHL or WHL. We are looking looking forward to the one women’s preliminary game we currently have tickets for during the 2010 Winter Olympics here in Vancouver!  Hopefully we can get another ticket for other games on the third release of tickets coming up, it would be money well spent.
