It still boggles our minds when we are in a place of business and they do not have free WIFI. Come on it is 2018 after all!

Recently a new golf course we are working with installed free WIFI for its customers. Simply click on the golf course’s public WIFI and you are in.

However, in thinking about it a bit more, and using our experiences while traveling through the U.S. we are considering changing the system. Most of our experiences this year when logging in to free, open (or password protected) WIFI at hotels and restaurants has been multi-step and either with an email address or link to Facebook. It is a bit annoying yes, but actually quite smart!

Build Your Database
We’ve blogged before about the importance of growing your database, because email is still one of the best marketing tools you have. So we are in the process of changing the client’s free WIFI to be opt-in by providing your email address only. No other promotions or pop-ups, just an email address and you have instant access to the free WIFI. Of course there is a disclaimer in place to make sure this is complies with CASL (Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation). 

Email Addresses Value
We estimate the value of an email address at $8 to $10 each. Using the free WIFI collection method has helped turn the cost of the wifi into a relatively low cost method of data collection.
