Facebook domination continues in BC
6sMarketing is a local Vancouver Marketing Agency that recently sponsored a study by Insights West which we found fascinating. The study surveyed 838 BC adults between March 2nd and 13th, 2013 regarding their social media use. Not surprisingly Facebook is still king with (67%) of survey respondents using it weekly, and 50% daily. Twitter saw only 21% of respondents using it daily.
The survey was also broken down by age groups.
- 76% of those aged 18-29 use Facebook daily
- 64% of the under-30 population agree “they would feel out of touch if they didn’t use social networking sites or apps regularly.”
- 77% of 18 – 40 year olds have heard of Pinterest and Instagram compared to 54% for Pinterest and 48% for Instagram for those aged 40 and older
These findings reinforce what we see with our own social media use and with that of our golf course clients. While engagement was strong on both Twitter and Pinterest for the first part of 2012 both have declined over the last 6 months. Facebook however has been very strong for the last few months with many of our golf course clients starting to see real engagement from their customers. Golfers are posting more photos, commenting more often and sharing feedback about new products in the golf shops or menu items in the clubhouse.
Personally we are both fans of Twitter and Facebook and they rank as our number one and two most used platforms. However we are seeing that Google+ and Instagram are both picking up steam and becoming very relevant marketing channels. We are also finding Pinterest to be quite useful in reaching the female demographic, but not so much for men. Jeff is still holding out for Path (view the blog Jeff wrote on Path), but I don’t think it is ever going to be widely adopted due to the limit of friends you can have (at least from a marketing perspective).
