British Columbia Winters
You have likely heard, but the Fraser Valley, Sea to Sky Region and the Thompson-Nicola Valley Region have been, and still are mostly under water with several year-round golf courses closed. The high water levels have brought havoc to these properties. The heavy rain was then followed by British Columbia’s hottest day in December… ever! Pentiction, BC recorded a temperature of +22.5C on December 1. AND THEN we woke up on December 4, in Kelowna, BC to a few inches of snow on the ground and temps that were -1C. Today it is snowing all across BC, including the Lower Mainland.
Golf Course Devastation
It was heart breaking to see some of the devastation and water damage to many golf courses in the province, many of whom did not have insurance for flood damage due to being in an area that is deemed a ‘flood plane”.
Golf Course Owners/ Operators Stick Together
As much as every golf course competes with every other golf course, when times are tough they stick together. During this time many golf course owners/ operators reached out to those in need to lend a hand, whether they were closed due to the flooding or not. They supplied labour, machinery, mechanic services (for machinery) and financial support where available. The golf industry has stepped up as it always does in a time of need!
Competitors Helping Competitors
Even though the golf business competes on a daily basis from golf course to golf course, it was so great to see many golf course owners sharing resources for their competitors benefit. It is nice to see so much support for fellow industry members!
